Obesity and Weight Loss

Current obesity facts suggest the close to fifty percent of adults is either overweight. Out of these more than thirty-three percent are suffering from obesity.

Are you overweight?

One way to find out you are overweight is by using the body mass index (Bmi). This measures your fat mass in relation to your height. The results will depend in part on the body’s accumulated fat, and how heavy the body is. If you have a Bmi that is over thirty then you are considered obese and if your Bmi falls within the 25 – 29 range then you are considered overweight. Between 20 and 25 and you are considered to be the right weight for you.

What causes obesity and overweight?

The causes of obesity and overweight vary but the major one is consuming more calories than you need per day. Your body requires a certain amount of calories to function on a daily basis. It is when you consume much more than your body requires that weight gain occurs.

Factors giving rise to obesity and overweight also include:
• Consume more calories and not enough physical activity
• Country’s culture
• Environment you live in
• Genetics
• The size of the portions eaten
• Lack of exercise

Health problems caused by being overweight and obese

When you are overweight and obesity you are at risk of;
• Heart problems
• Stroke
• Respiratory problems
• Arthritis
• Gallbladder problems

Another problem with being overweight is the places where the weight is stored. People tend to store weight one of two places on the body mainly, their hops and buttocks, and their waist. Should your waist size be greater than 35 inches you are at greater risk of getting health related problems?

Prevention

One sure way to obesity prevention is to use up more calories than you consume. This can be achieved if you follow a balanced diet and engage in some form of moderate physical activity three times a week. Prior to going on a weight loss program it is important that you contact your physician.

To safely lose weight you should:
• Set a weight lose goal that is appropriate for you
• Consume a healthy diet consisting of a variety of foods
• Engage in physical activity

Weight loss is a lifestyle change that must be adhered to over time to be effective. Once the weight is gone it then becomes necessary that you eat a balanced diet and do physical activity in order to maintain your weight. By engaging in physical activity you will also be strengthening your heart and lungs. It has also been associated with improved mental function.
