Adult Weight Loss

Obesity or being overweight increases an individual’s risks for several physiological and psychological ailments. Fad diets and crash diets are an unhealthy option for weight loss and only provide temporary weight loss. Permanent weight loss requires a change of lifestyle, which would include healthier meals and moderate exercise. A healthy lifestyle does not mean that you would have to eat only salads for the rest of your life. In fact this would not be recommended, as you would not receive an adequate amount of fats and proteins. A healthy diet is a diet that includes essential nutrition in moderate amounts. You will also be able to indulge in the occasional burger and fries- provided it remains occasional!

Weight loss should not be attempted for a specific occasion but rather for better health.

You can alter your lifestyle by changing your diet. You can start this by just substituting fruits for snacks. Do away with chips, fries and fatty sandwich spreads, instead stock your refrigerator with fresh fruits. Every time you feel the need to snack, prepare a fruit bowl or simply wash and peel a fruit. Fruits are high in nutrition and fiber and will help to keep you satiated for much longer. Once this has become a part of your regular schedule, you can start to change other aspects of your diet.

Start with your breakfast- avoid your usual bacon and ham sandwich and instead have a chicken sandwich made with whole meal bread. Make sure that you use skinless chicken as this will ensure lower fat and cholesterol content. You can also use a homemade yogurt sandwich spread.

Alternately, you can have a chicken salad or a plate of eggs and a milkshake made with fresh fruits. Make sure that your breakfast is a moderate meal and not a small one; you can have a lighter lunch instead. You can look for new healthy breakfast foods and meals so that it does not get monotonous.

Once you are used to this change, you can start to change you main meals as well. Exclude all fast foods and junk foods from your diet when you start or else you will tend to backslide and binge. Have at least one or two salads and spice them up with vinaigrettes to make them appetizing. You can also have one chicken or fish dish, but make sure to prepare it with less oil than you normally would. You can use flaxseed oil or olive oil when cooking as these are healthier oils. Finish off your meals with a bowl of fresh fruits and jelly or custard.

Do not try to change your eating habits rapidly; instead concentrate on changing just one aspect at a time. This is very important as suddenly changing your entire diet can be overwhelming and can lead to you going off your new diet.

In addition to this, it would also be wise to include at least 30 minutes of exercise in your daily schedule. Exercise boosts circulation and increases your metabolic rate, which increases the amount of fat you burn when going about your daily activities.
